With the aim of increasing its operating efficiency and continuing to raise its environmental standards, the new “Shredder” processing plant will facilitate the treatment of scrap that will be converted into steel. It will also enable the company to reduce more than 7,000 tons of CO2 per year and reduce the energy consumption of its main production plant by 2.5%.
The facilities are located at the Colina Plant and will be a fundamental part of Aceros AZA´s operation, which currently produces more than 450,000 tons of sustainable steel per year from recycled scrap. It also generates 47 new jobs and increases scrap processing capacity by 40%.
“This is one of the most important investments of the last decades, which allows us to continue being at the forefront of the steel industry. We are betting on the country” growth, on a sustainable development of which we are all a part,” said Aceros AZA” chairman of the board, Jorge Matetic.
With a capacity to process up to 100 tons of scrap per hour, the new plant is the largest and most modern shredder of its kind in the country.
It is estimated that it will process annually about 230,000 tons of scrap, obtaining more than 189,000 tons of high quality fragmented ferrous material, more than 3,000 tons of recoverable non-ferrous materials and about 40,000 tons of potential co-products.
Acero AZA is the main steel producer in Chile, with 71 years of history in the local steel industry and was recognized by WorldSteel as the steel mill with the third lowest carbon footprint worldwide, positioning it as one of the main sustainable steel producers in the world.
