New wind farm for ArcelorMittal Acindar and PCR in Argentina

Steel producer ArcelorMittal Acindar and PCR announced the construction of a new wind farm in the town of Olavarría, province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The wind farm will have 180 megawatts of power, in a first stage, and its energy will be used to supply Acindar’s industrial plants in the country.

In addition, the companies will carry out a series of works to increase the capacity of the transmission system and, at the same time, enable the construction of new renewable generation centers. PCR and Acindar are also shareholders of Generación Eléctrica Argentina Renovable (GEAR), with 51% and 49%, respectively. This company is also the owner of the wind and solar farm San Luis Norte, located in Belgrano, San Luis, which has a total capacity of 112.5 MW. In this case, an 18 MW solar module will be incorporated, making it the first hybrid farm in the country.

Both the renewable energy generated by the San Luis Norte wind farm, as well as that expected to be generated by the Olavarría wind farm, will be used to supply ArcelorMittal Acindar’s industrial plants in the country.

Federico Amos, CEO of ArcelorMittal Acindar indicated that the company is “leading the reduction of CO2 emissions for the Argentine steel industry. With this new investment we reaffirm our commitment to the goal of reducing our carbon footprint by 30% by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050”.

This project reflects the Latin American steel industry’s commitment to the transition to clean energy sources and the reduction of its carbon footprint.
